Geeks, theatre lovers, and geeky theatre lovers (see Fig. 1) packed the audience last Thursday at VTG’s reading of Thom Dunn’s original play, True Believers, at Trident Booksellers & Café.
We don’t generally like to choose favorites, but there was one comment that stood out to us and it probably best captures the evening:
“I want to thank you for the many nerdgasms.”
A group of eight enthusiastic actors brought Dunn’s quirky comic convention to life, giving audiences a look into a subculture often ignored by the mainstream. Despite some of the play’s references being recognizable to only the truest of nerds, Dunn’s absurd humor and delicate portrayal of individuals caught in transition pushed True Believers beyond the comic world, allowing the entire audience to connect with the story.
After the reading–and a quick break for last minute drink orders–the talkback began. Thom Dunn gave the audience insight into his inspiration and process. In return, the audience offered the playwright and VTG valuable feedback.
If you missed VTG’s reading of True Believers, don’t worry: True Believers is heading to ImprovBoston’s Geek Week, which runs April 25-29. Performance time and date is TBD.
